Avoiding Scams

The sad truth about the world we live in, is that there are many people out there who like to take advantage of people. When we’re living in a bad economic climate, and people are struggling and looking for assistance, this provides ample opportunities for those who would take advantage of the weak to do so.

When someone is in a poor financial situation, and has bad credit, or terrible credit…they generally become a little more desperate, and quick to respond to offers for improving their credit score. Often times companies will claim that they can reduce your debt, by paying small amounts to them, and they will in turn make payments to your creditors. Often times you will pay these companies high fees, and yet nothing ever happens. Eventually you will either have to take legal action to recover your money, or you will find that the company has mysteriously disappeared from the face of the earth.

Of course, just because there are people out there who would take advantage of those with bad credit, does not mean that there aren’t many legitimate companies that provide a useful and beneficial service.

The key is to be well informed, and never make any commitments without fully understanding what you’re getting into. Being in debt, with bad credit, and experiencing financial hardships makes it easy to look for that “magic bullet” solution…but just beware that some companies are legit, and some companies are not.

If a company seems to be very aggressive with you, and attempts to pressure you into agreements, then they are likely providing a service that is not legitimate. They should always be willing to send you information about their company and the services they offer. If they seem to already have all the answers, without even having looked into your financial situation…they are most likely just trying to make a sale.

Your best bet is to stick with companies that offer solid advice, and are eager and willing to HELP you not SELL you.

Make sure to never give out your personal information, especially important items like social security numbers and tax information.
